Early maritime transport at Wushi Harbor primarily relied on Junks and An-pian-á. When vessels entered the Yilan River from Wushi Harbor, the shallower riverbed required cargo to be unloaded from Junks or An-pian-á vessels and transferred to sampan-style river boats for transport further inland.

During the heyday of Wushi Harbor’s shipping era, it was said that “goods entered the market at all hours; once the shipments arrived, they were sold instantly”. Imports included silk fabrics, sheepskins, and sundries from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Fuzhou; dried fruits, wheat, beans, ceramics, joss paper, and medicinal herbs from Zhangzhou, Quanzhou, Hu’an, and Xiamen; and miscellaneous Western goods from Guangdong and Macau. Returning empty vessels often carried stones as ballast, known as “ballast stones” (yachangshi). Exported goods consisted of rice, ramie, assam indigo, sundries, and camphor.
